A prayer for our nation and leaders
Today’s blog post comes from Susan Quinnell, Director of Pastoral Care at Emmaus. Because I’m posting it, my picture appears above. Sorry Susan! One of these days, I’ll figure this technology stuff out better. For now, you’ll all have to endure my photo one more time here.
But we did want to share this beautiful poem that Susan wrote. We share it with you on this election day in our country. May it be a blessing from God to you today and after the elections. And may it be a prayer from each of us to our great and compassionate God.
GOD of GRACE and LOVE,
We need YOU on the eve of our nation’s election.
This has been an ugly, painful and unsettling political season.
Your people are experiencing confusion, anger, distrust and fear as votes are made, tallied and announced. Our future seems uncertain.
Turn our eyes, our hearts and our attention to YOU.
Forgive us for the divisiveness amongst our nation’s people and amongst ourselves.
Forgive us for our lack of humility and our unwillingness to look into and hear the heart of another who’s perspective is different than ours.
Forgive us for the mess we are in.
COME, LORD JESUS.
OUR FATHER, WHO ART IN HEAVEN
HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME.
YOUR KINGDOM COME, YOUR WILL BE DONE
ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.
Strengthen our trust in YOU.
Be our light. Be our way.
GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD,
We thank YOU for the abundance we live with in our nation.
Make us stewards of all these gifts YOU have given us.
Remind us of the lilies and the birds of the air and how YOU value and care for each one.
Just as you care for us. Take our anxiety and our uncertainty and turn us towards YOU.
AND FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES,
AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US.
Lord, why do we see the speck in our sister’s and brother’s eye, and do not notice the log in our own?
Gracious God, fill us with humility.
Turn us toward prayer for ourselves and the ones who have offended us.
LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION
BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
Loving, Counselor God,
Guide and direct us towards healing and health for our nation.
Turn us towards YOUR plan and YOUR will.
Heal our hearts. Bring us humility, understanding and unity through YOU.
FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM
THE POWER AND THE GLORY
FOREVER AND EVER.
God, be with us.
Give us peace.
